When travelling, protecting your jewelry and other valuables should always be top priority. But entering or exiting a country can be tricky because of inspections, security, duties, and the like. Check out below for some important tips to ensure a worry-free flight with your favourite statement pieces:

MELANIE GEORGACOPOULOS Essence Line Pendant

  1. 1.  Have It Covered
  2. ●  Make sure your jewelry is properly insured. When it comes to your homeowners or rental policy, jewelry typically is insured only up to about $1,000, so if you lose your $6,000 engagement ring, you could be out $5,000.
  3. ●  Be certain that you have worldwide jewelry coverage. Some coverage plans only offer protection in the US – not so helpful if you’re heading to Mexico.
  4. ●  Before you leave, have a current appraisal done on your jewelry and have your items re-evaluated to current values and replacement costs. Then, have your insurance coverage adjusted accordingly. You don’t want to be caught in a situation where you don’t have enough insurance in the event of loss, theft or damage. Source: Jewelers Mutual

  1. 2.  Carry it on
  2. ●  Never put jewelry in checked baggage. Instead, wear it or stow it in your carryon bag. If you wear it, take extra care by slipping a pendant inside a sweater or turning your ring so only the band shows. Source: The Blonde Abroad

  1. 3.  Proof of Ownership
  2. ●  You may not be able to pre-register jewelry if it does not have unique, permanent markings. Canada can apply a sticker to the pieces but that may not suffice if you need to remove it. You should therefore take at least some of the following steps to ensure you can prove prior ownership before you get to the border:
  3. ●  Obtain an appraisal report and a signed and dated photograph of each piece of jewelry
  4. ●  Obtain written certification that the items or jewelry in the photographs are the ones described in the appraisal report.
  5. ●  Bring any other documents you may have that fully describe the item—such as sales receipts, insurance policies as forms of proof. Source: EzBorderCrossing

With the last long weekend of summer coming to an end, fall is just around the corner.  Whether you are on your way back to school or heading back to the office, now is the time to update your style with a fresh new look for fall.  Complete your look with jewelry trends taken from the F/W runways of 2015.

ON THE CHAIN

An emphasis on 70s fashion this fall has brought the pendant necklace back to the forefront.  Pendants seen were subdued then previous seasons and were paired on slim graceful chains giving a much more delicate and feminine look.  Adeline Cacheux Pop Stripes Long Necklace is the perfect match to achieve this look.

THE RETURN OF PEARLS

Pearls are undeniable timeless and always on trend no matter what the season is. This fall the gem stone is shedding its conservative reputation and finding a home on hard-edged and artful pieces for the modern woman. Melanie Georgacopoulos Slided Pearl Bracelet Saskia Diez Pearl and Silver Sling Ring  gives the classic pearl look with a modern twist.

SINGLES ONLY

The single earring is continuing trend that doesn't seem to be stopping anytime soon. It is asserting its independence and letting the world know it needn't be a set to show how chic it is.  Yannis Sergakis Adornments Crochets Rose and Black Gold Earring is the perfect statement piece to show off this fall.

Jewelry: Yannis Sergakis
Runway: Christian Dior

BAROQUE

Antique-inspired jewelry was seen on many runways this season. Baroque is definitely in this fall and fashonistas with an eye for ornate embellishment will have their pick of gems and filigree with pieces well-suited for the halls of Versailles. Maison Margiela Fine Jewelry Pompadour Deconstructed Necklace and Pompadour Deconstructed Earrings give that antique inspiration with a modern look.

Pearls were once seen as conservative, but the traditional views of pearls as old-fashioned jewelry are changing and numerous brands are reinventing pearls for the modern women. While pearls have always been in fashion, they are no longer dismissed to your grandmother’s closet.  Pearls are making a comeback in a big way, alongside with diamonds they are a staple among many fashionistas worldwide.

Pearls are a classic addition to any jewelry collection as they embody sophisticated elegance. They are also immensely flattering to one’s complexion.  Simply put, pearls never go out of style, so it’s not surprising to see celebrities and the younger generation taking a shine to them.

Melanie Georgacopoulos is one designer who has given pearl jewellry a modern twist by splicing and cutting pearls and using them in new ways. She has turned pearls into statement pieces with the intent on reviving the material with modern meanings that challenge ideas of classic pearl jewelry.  She explains, “I decided to make pearls my trademark when I noticed that there was very little contemporary pearl jewelry and that most people thought them outdated and conventional. I look at pearls from a fresh perspective when creating my collections, concentrating on innovative design that is easy to wear. Of course, it has helped a lot that pearls are appearing more and more on the catwalk as well as on prominent celebrities. These days women are not restricted to the traditional single-strand pearl necklace anymore; they now have a wide variety of interesting choices.”
